Women were relegated to household duties so educating them was useless. They only cooked cleaned and washed and served the family. It was only when Reformist like Swami Vivekanand Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Arya Samaj Brahmo Samaj and Ramkrishan Mission took up the cause of Women Education only attention was paid towards educating women. Same conditions prevailed in Europe where too Progressive People and Reformists brought in Education for women.
