Answer:

Education always comes at a cost. The question is, who will or should pay that cost.

The fact that good education always yields a return means that governments and private organisations often see a cost/benefit gain in investing in education. This sometimes leads people to imagine that education is 'free' but it never is. Someone else is paying.

There is one way that seems 'free.' Good education requires teachers and staff who are well trained, committed and who have the time to invest in your education. The most common way this has happened in the past is within the family home. But even home education costs. It may not have term fees and so on, but it costs in all the time, effort and resources invested by parents in their children's education.

Institutions of education were initially formed for children whose family could not give them a good education, but soon governments and others took up this idea and now we have a majority of our children engaged in institutional learning facilitated by professionals.

So, either way invest the time, effort and resources to educate children ourselves, or we pay professionals to do it. Either way, it costs.
