Why aren't fans square or rectangular, only circular?

Because, a fan rotates about it’s center. A circle is uniform and all other shapes are non-uniform.

A non-uniform shape easily gets unstable at higher velocities due to uneven distribution of mass.

Even if you try to keep a quadrilateral frame, your rotor should be circular to be stable. Disturbances get amplified very easily in uneven shaped fans.

Imagine drinking coffee on a moving car with square shaped tyres. I hope you will not have a smooth ride.
