Answer:

Legumes, including Arhar Dal, in general help in nitrogen fixation. This will improve soil fertility. However, it may not be sufficient, as Soil fertility is not merely Nitrogen Content in the soil. Soil fertility refers to the ability of a soil to sustain agricultural plant growth.

A fertile soil has the following properties:

· The ability to supply essential plant nutrients and soil water in adequate amounts and proportions for plant growth;

The absence of toxic substances which may inhibit plant growth.

To improve soil fertility, depending on soil condition, apart from using legumes in crop rotation, practices that may be followed are given at high level:

1. Crop Rotation –

a. Grow dissimilar crops in same field over sequenced seasons

b. Grow cover crops around cash crops

2. Soil Fertilization

a. Ensure NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium) are applied in appropriate proportion after getting soil tested in soil laboratory.

b. Use higher quantity organic manures that will increase organic / humus content of soil

3. Other Soil Conservation Measures

a. Contour ploughing / Terrace farming as applicable

b. Windbreaks

c. Salinity Management

d. Active Mineralization

4. Irrigation

a. Avoid over-irrigation – use technique like drip / sprinkler irrigation

b. In case of dry land, practice rain water harvesting
