If the army tanks were provided with wheels and tyres, they would have sunk into the ground due to their weight. ... Steel belts enable the tanks to spread their weight over a larger surface area and thus exert a lower force per unit area on the ground. These belts are called caterpillar wheels.

Army tanks are heavily loaded with weapons ,hence caterpillar wheels are installed in them to increase friction between ground and its wheels,
