Ulva is a type of marine algae which is also known as Sea lettuce. It can reproduce sexually and asexually.
Asexual reproduction takes place by the formation of quadri-flagellate zoospores in the diploid asexual plant or the sporophyte which is morphologically similar to the gametophyte.
Each cell except the basal cells of the sporophyte (2n) undergoes meiosis or the reduction division and forms 8 to 16 zoospores that are later released in water. Each zoospore ultimately develops and forms a haploid sexual plant i.e. gametophytes.
Therefore, the alternating generations of the life-cycle of Ulva show that an asexual plant is diploid.
