He was already a Hindu so he accepted Buddhism. His conversion to Buddhism was gradual and not immediate. Every body use to tell he left with sorrow and remorse after the war of Kalinga. But this is not 100% true.

He accepted the Buddhism to save his large territory from foreign attack. For this he spreaded Buddhism outside of India.

Even he adopted policy of Dhamma, which was a way of life, a code of conduct and a set of principles to be adopted and practiced by the people at large.

Buddhism was his personal belief and Dhamma signifies a general code of conduct. So I can also conclude that to promote the policy of Dhamma he accepted Buddhism.
