Answer:

An athlete feels muscle cramps because of anaerobic respiration. As the athlete runs fastly, he/she is not able to resource properly, so the muscles itself start respiration and as it can't do aerobic respiration it has to do anaerobic respiration. But unfortunately anaerobic respiration don't produce sufficient ATP molecules and also lactic acid us a product of anaerobic respiration which causes pain. That's why a athlete feels muscle cramps.
