Why atomic number is sum more appropriate parameter than atomic mass for classification of periodic table?

By using atomic mass as a parameter for building the periodic table some problems occured.
like some elements of higher atomic weight had to be preceded the elements with relatively lower weights. This was because those elements resembled the properties of that particular group.
By using atomic numbers as a parameter the limitations of anamolous series was eliminated.
