Aurangzeb ascended the throne in 1658 CE, assuming the title of Alamgir. He ruled for almost a fifty years till his death in 1707 CE. During his long reign, the Mughal Empire had the largest territorial extent. It stretched from Kashmir in the north to Karnataka in the south and from Hindu Kush in the west to Chittagong in the east.

Aurangzeb devoted the last twenty six years of his life to his relentless Deccan. Policy for the purpose of which he had moved his court to Deccan.

However, his reign was also fraught with conflicts with various regional forces among which the Marathas were the most formidable opponents.
