The basement rooms of Taj Mahal are sealed and it is expected that there may be one of these three reasons for sealing the twenty-two room basement:
1. The basement of the monument is made of the marble which is converted to a powdered form if it comes in contact with an excess of carbon dioxide.
2. Mumtaz Mahal's body is mummified and kept in one of the rooms of the basement. The rooms were sealed to avoid any English intervention lest they could conduct a research on the mummy.
3. It was doubted that it was a Hindu temple named Tejo Mahalaya and it is doubted that the tomb was built on top of the temple. Hence, to avoid any communal conflict the basement was sealed.
