why basketball is not that popular in India? Give 3 big reasons

Answer:
Well, why not? For me, a national sport of a country is more than just a sport in which the country has a rich history. That logic makes sense because it honours the sport which has brought laurels to the country and put it on the map. Hockey has done that so a stronger argument can be made for it to be the national sport of India. I’m trying to look at the issue with a different point of view.
From the point of view of potential and accessibility. Those are the two factors which are conducive to development of talent at the grassroot level. When I say potential, I’m not talking about the potential of talent of the players in the country. Potential here means potential of the country to provide the infrastructure and serve the requirements of creating an environment where the sport can flourish
Answer:
1. Cricket(foremost) and people's association of cricket with patriotism(although cricket was introduced by Britishers) and other sports(tennis, basketball, football, boxing etc) being termed foreign.
2. Lack of basketball courts or lack of incentive for building one.
3. Cost of building a basketball court as compared to other sports(not that cost matters for sports in a country where millions are spent on a single game of cricket). I have seen people playing cricket on basketball courts anyway.
4. Since basketball is shown in Hollywood movies and some stereotypical Bollywood movies as a game played only by 'college guys' or 'cool dudes', it is considered as classy. More people will update their fb profile pic with basketball in their hands than actually playing basketball.
5.People's wrong perception of basketball as the sport only tall people play or play to become tall.
6.Hardly any attention(facilities, money, equipment and recognition) given to any other sports(including basketball) and sport persons except cricket by sports authorities in India even as our national game hockey is in vain.

7.Laziness and discomfort of Indian people in playing aggressive physical games and contact sports.
8.Scarcity of good coaches or sports/PE teachers in schools and colleges to introduce youngsters to basketball and lay emphasis on the importance of playing outdoor team sports. Most schools/colleges don't have any.
9. No sports based scholarships for colleges in India.
10. Very few tournaments for basketball held in schools and colleges of India.
