why birds do not cast shadow when flying at great height

When the bird flies high the dark part of the shadow that is called umbra does not reach the ground so we do not see its shadow. While a low flying bird's shadow (umbra) reaches the ground so we see its shadow.

That depends upon the distance of the bird from the ground which is called the screen .
