The gravity at the surface of an object depends not only on its mass but also on its size. If the size of the Earth was compressed to half its present radius, the gravity at the surface will be four times more. In other words, we would all weight four times heavier. This is because the force of gravity obeys "inverse square law" - it gets stronger at shorter distances.

Now, just as an example, let us take a black hole which has a mass of 20 times the sun's mass but has a diameter of only 10 kilometers, as compared to the sun's diameter of 1.4 million kilometers.  Now you know why black holes have such strong gravitational pull as to stop even light from escaping.
