Bleaching powder is a yellowish white powder with a strong smell of chlorine. When exposed to air,bleaching powder gives a smell of chlorine. This is because bleaching powder reacts with carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to produce calcium carbonate and chlorine gas.
CaOCl₂ + CO₂ ==> CaCO₃ + Cl₂

as the chemical formula of bleaching powder is Caocl2...that is calcium oxy chloride....bleaching powder contains the highest amount of molecule in chemical formula ...hence it has properties of chlorine ...and it smells like chlorine
