Why Brahmins were superior in ancient India:

• The society in ancient India was divided on the basis of Varna system.

• The Varna system came into existence in Vedic age.

• The 10th mandala of Rig Veda mentions about the Purushasuktam [ four fold varna system ].

• At the beginning, Varna is defined as the occupation.

• Later on it has changed into a caste system.

• Varna system divides the society as Brahmins, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudras.

• Brahmins were the highest caste during the Varna system.

• Generally, Brahmins were priests, scholars, teachers, intellectuals.

• They were considered as superior after the Gods.

• Many kings used to respect Brahmin and donate lands to the Brahmins.

• The first kings who donated land grants to Brahmins as Agraharas were Satavahanas.

Hence, Brahmins were considered to be most superior in the ancient India.
