Brazil has abolished its fourth time zone, which means that people living southwest of the Amazon rainforest region and other areas are four hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Brazil now has three time zones instead of four.

Coordinated Universal Time is used to calculate time in Brazil and the country has four time zones all lying west to the Greenwich Meridian.

The UTC−02:00 timezone is only used in some islands on the northeast coast of Brazil.

The UTC-03:00, commonly abbreviated as the BRT, is the official timezone and is the same as other South American countries like Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. This timezone is adjusted with daylight saving.

The UTC-04:00 is used by 5 states that lie in the west of the country.

The UTC-05:00 was discontinued in 2008 and reinstated in 2013 after a majority of voters voted in favor of bringing the state of Acre and the southwestern part of the Amazonas state to this time.

Brazil's large geographic size is the main reason for four time zones.
