When we have rollers at one end then it is allowed to expand freely without any thermal stress.in summers the bridges may expand due to the increase in the temperature and in winters the bridges may compress due to decrease in the temperature.

Solution: In steel bridges one end is made to rest on rollers with enough space provided for expansion during summer.  In this way the bridges can move forward or backward during expansion or contraction. If there is no expansion gap, bridges may get damaged.
