Brine (saturated sodium chloride solution) is usually the last solution used in an aqueous wash to help remove trace amounts of water (and anything water soluble) from the organic layer.
Many chemists skip this step however, since sodium sulfate or manganese sulfate is used to remove water from the organic layer anyway, after the organic layer is separated......
