because it is a cash crop and british had a vey good profit by selling it

the British did so because they wanted to make opium to become a large trader by producing several products. the conditions for growing opium was only in south africa and india.when the soil conditions did not favour the growth of opium in south africa,the british immediately focused its place of growth on india
