The british were torturing Indians to curb the feeling of nationalism. They wanted to stop the rising tide of nationalism and prevent the nation revolt like that happened in 1857.

They were constantly working on their policy of divide and rule by turning the province against province, kings against kings, castes against castes and above all Hindus against Muslims. As hindus and muslims comprised of a greater population of India it would become easier for the britishers to stop the rising tide of nationalism by turning hindus and muslims against one another. They wanted to continue their rule over India and it was possible only by breaking the indians into groups . This helped them to divert the indians from the freedom struggle against them.
