It is called a mutiny, because the people of India, especially the Sepoy’s were discontent with the British administration in various aspects like Political, Social, Military and economical.

Some of the causes are :

Introduction of Greece cartridge systems

Racial discrimination in army and civil services

Annexation of Indian territories

Drain of wealth

Land revenue system

Due to this administrative structure, the people decided to overthrow the British government.

The Sepoy had the largest contribution to this mutiny and they started this, which spread to the other people.

Thus the 1857 revolt is also referred as “The Sepoy Mutiny”.

hope it helps

The revolt of the 1857 has been termed as a 'Sepoy Mutiny' by the British. Because Most of the British writers view it as nothing more than a mutiny of the soldiers, which was brought about by the introduction of greased cartridges or bullets.

British believe that the mutiny never had a mass participation and was concentrated in few regions of North India.

However, Indian nationalists leaders such as Veer Savarkar and A Mehta call it a 'First War of Independence'. Even the British Prime minister, Disraeli, recognised it as a national revolt.

However, The truth possibly lies somewhere in between the two views. Since the nobles, rulers and sepoys actively participated in it, calling it only a sepoy mutiny would be incorrect.
