Plastic buckets are opaque, so you can't visually monitor fermentation (plastic carboys do not have this issue). Plastic is permeable to oxygen, making it less suitable than glass for long-term aging.

Answer:

For hand carried buckets, it is a great advantage that plastic is lightweight. Because if you want to fill up a bucket with gravel and carry it off, your muscles will thank you for not adding the weight of a heavy metal bucket too.

For when you care about the temperature of the contents, it is a great advantage that plastic is thermally insulating. Because if you want to carry hot water to de-ice your frozen gate lock, it's a lot less painful to grip the bottom of a cool plastic bucket than a hot metal bucket.

On the other hand, if you're moving dirt out of a hole in a harsh mining environment, metal is going to work better due to greater wear resistance.
