The ruling military junta changed its name from Burma to Myanmarin 1989, a year after thousands were killed in the suppression of a popular uprising. Rangoon also became Yangon. The Adaptation of Expression Law also introduced English language names for other towns, some of which were not ethnically Burmese.

Myanmar is the more accurate name for Burma since it more or less makes up the modern union that is there today.
The problem is that it was changed suddenly and without the people's consent. Not using “Myanmar” when speaking with foreigners was a form of rebellion. This way of thinking though has largely died out.
Nowadays it's more of a name foreigners are used to. Myanmar people never actually called the nation Burma in their native languages. (Burman majority even called the homeland Myanmar in Burmese. Telling foreigners in their language to not call it Burma and not ever refering to it as Myanmar in ‘Myanmar person to foreigner person’ dialog was again a form of rebellion.)
