Heya

Sheena here...

Q. Why C4 plants are called C4 plants?

=>In C4 Plants the carbon dioxide is fixed by the enzyme phosphoenolpyruvate which is a 3 carbon compound to form 4 carbon compound oxaloacetic acid.

=> Since the first stable product is formed is 4 carbon compound so  the pathway is known as C4 pathway and the plants which use this pathway are know as C4 plants.

In certain tropical plants CO2 is not directly absorbed by rubisco due to low concentration of CO2 they follow another pathway.

In this alternative pathway the first stable compound is 4 carbon compound oxaloacetate and hence it is called as C4 pathway.

The plants like maize, jowar, sugarcane, have C4 pathway and thus this plant are called as C4 plants.
