CaCl2 is used to clear the snow at hill stations because it depresses the freezing point of ice . when CaCl2 is added - there is lowering of the freezing point of the salt water to -29o Celsius. hence it doesn't melts the ice but loweres the freezing point . NaCl are same coz.They are two ionic compounds. In the cold, it will not be a hassle to clear the snow roads in any way.Thats why used to use it.
