Calgon conditioning is better than carbonate conditioning because it forms a water soluble complex Na2[Ca2(Po3) 6] and does not form scales

Calgon is a brand registered trademark of water softener, and bath and beauty products, which contains the active ingredients like zeolite and polycarboxylate.

These substances are less problematic in wastewater treatment than phosphates and carbonates.

Calgon is S
odium hexa Meta Phosphate Na2 [Na4 (PO3)6], which when reacts with calcium ions forms a highly soluble complex and thus prevents the precipitation of scale forming salt. The added Calgon forms soluble complex compound with CaSo4, thereby it prevents the scale and sludge formation in the boilers or containers.

Whereas in carbonate conditioning, scales are formed due to the formation of calcium deposits. However, these scales can be removed by adding
Na2CO3 to the boiler water.
