Why can a piece of chalkcan be easily broken into smaller pieceswhile a coal piece cannot be broken easily

particles of matter have forces acting between them.this force keeps the particles together.The strength of this force of attraction varies from one kind of matter to another but coal not....... And particles of chalk are not tightly packed so it breaks easily
