CAM plants or crassulacean acid metabolism is a mechanism usually used by desert plants to reduce the amount of water loss during the day. Since their stomata are closed during the day, CO2 cannot enter the leaves so photosynthesis cannot occur because light reactions are needed to provide the chloroplasts with its needed ATP and NADPH. So during the night, when the stomata is open it takes in the CO2 and stores it in organic acids. So during the day, CO2 is released from the acids to make the sugar needed in photosynthesis.

The CAM plants keep their stomata closed during the day time this is due to the following reasons;
Explanation:
- The CAM plants close their stomata at the time of day and open it in night.
- When the stomata remains closed then this will prevent the loss of water by the process of transpiration.
- This process also prevents the carbon dioxide gas being entering into the plant leaves.
- The carbon dioxide gas is collected at night and remain stored in the form of organic acids until the day begins.
- This is the strategy of plants to store water and prevents is loss.
