why can martians not understand and recognise the book??

Answer: the martian first thought that the book is a Sandwich and then they tried to eat them but when they eat they can't feel any taste and after that one of them says that I can see that earthling use this for eating but for communicating after this the think tank told that this is communicating Sandwich and he tried to hear some communicating voice by taking this book close to his ear but they can't hear any voices after sometime one of the them told that are telling use this communicating device not by hearing but by seeing this so they tried to read the book in this way martian try to recognise the book
