Topsoil is the layer of soil that contains the most nutrients. Without topsoil, it is much more difficult to grow plants, and the plants that do grow will not have as many nutrients in them. If soil erosion occurs in areas that rely on their own crops to sustain the population, the resulting poor growth and poor crop quality can mean that the people are not getting the nutrients they need. This leads to a malnourished population.
