Speed tells us about how fast or slow an object is moving.
SPEED = distance travelled/time taken.
Speed is a scalar quantity.
AS DISTANCE cannot be negative for a moving particle so, speed for a particle cannot have negative value.
For example :
A car moves at a speed of 40km/hr.

Yes speed is always positive because distance travelled and time taken are always positive by which speed is measured.
In physics speed is calculated by
Speed=Distance/Time
Also we see in our daily life that if we go forward or backward there is always some speed by which we move also we travel some distance while some time is taken in this activity.
