why can't a nutron exists independently

Your question has an error in its premise. Protons exist outside nuclei without any detrimental effects. Neutrons on the other hand start the decay process upon separation and within 15 minutes will have decayed. But the explanation of the causality of that decay leaves a lot to be desired.
