The second sperm can't fertilize the ovum because when the first sperm penetrates the ovum , it comes in contact with the zona pellucida layer. It induces some changes in this membrane which blocks the entry of second sperm .

Moreover , if the second sperm penetrates the ovum , then the resulting zygote formed will be triploid instead of diploid. This will result in chromosomal disorder .
