Why can't carbon exist in diatomic stage?

Carbon is tetrahedral and forms only covalent bonds with other atoms or itself it can't exist in diatomic stage


ShubhankarP: If Carbon can form one, two, or three covalent compounds then why can't it form a fourth one a exist in diatomic state?
