In order to form an iconic compound carbon needs to gain or lose four electrons, which is not possible.

  • It will be difficult for the nucleus with six proton to hold ten electrons. i.e four more.

  • It would require a very large amount of energy to remove four electrons leaving behind nucleus with six proton holding two electron.
