Why can't lone pairs remain in unhybridised orbitals?

If a lone pair is participating in resonance, this means the atom is either Sp2 or Sp hybridized. Looking at the Sp2 case, that means there are 3 Sp2 orbitals and one P orbital. Assuming there is no formal charge on the atom, the 3 hybrid orbitals are used for bonding and the lone P-orbital holds the lone pair. Sp3 orbitals are not involved with resonance so the lone pair involved in resonance could never be in an Sp3 orbital.
