The major hurdle to use of essential medicines in India is its low availability within health care facilities. In India, where the proportion of poor economic group is high, economic constraints related to the ability to afford medicines, constitute a major reason for lack of access to essential medicines. As a result about 23% of the sick can't afford healthcare. The result of that, about 55 million Indians were pushed into poverty in a single year because of having to fund their own healthcare and 38 million of them fell below the poverty line due to spending on medicines alone, according to a new study.
