Why can’t plants use nitrogen gas directly?

Because their system forbids them to do so, however if you somehow created a mutation in the plant, it might be able to breathe in, literally breath in, the CO2 along with much-needed N2.

plants to not use nitrogen directly from the air because nitrogen itself unreactive and cannot be used by green plants to make protein.
