Sometimes , the soil might not be so fertile or the soil might not contain enough humus and the nutrients which are required for the plant growth.

some plants can't get enough nutrients from the soil because they are structured/ designed in such a way that wont enable them to collect nitrogen or any other nutrient from soil directly. there are certain organisms like rhizobium that'll fix. And it also happens when plants take in important nutrients from host plants rather soil.
