Why can't the meaning of ' grand ' be ' largest ' ?

Grand means large and largest is the superlative degree of large. SO, LARGEST CAN'T BE THE OTHER NAME OF GRAND (Positive degree)

grand means...gud and very great
like u can say that the reception was grand.....
but large means big and huge....
like:it was a large building......
