Human can't digest roughage because of the beta linkages that hold the glucose molecules together. Humans don't have enzymes that can break linkages.

Our digestive system doesn't contain the necessary enzymes required for the digestion of the roughage. To digest roughage one needs the enzyme cellulase to be present to break down these cellulose.Because of this we cannot digest it.
