Why can't we have half-reactions by themselves?

So, the reason you to do that is because the electrons thaf are being lost in the oxidation half reaction are the exact same electrons that are being gained in the reduction half reaction .They are the same electrons ,they should be the same number.So, we need to make those no.of electrons equal.
