All lengths cannot be measured by just one unit (such as meter) because for certain sizes, it becomes very inconvenient to use meters.
Eg: 1) The distance of Earth from the Sun in meters is, 149,600,000,000m. If we use kilometers, it is :
149,600,000km. But for convenience sake, we use q unit called an Astronomical unit.
If we use this , the distance is just: 1au
2) For measuring really small things like microbes, or subatomic particles.
Size of an average bacterium is 0.0000011m
Size of a proton is 0.000000000000000877m
So, for convenience, we use micrometers or femtometers.
