We can't just use the formula Heat absorbed / given = mcΔT as there is no term of latent heat involved

Explanation:

  • Here the formula of Q = mcΔT has been used but there is an extra term mL too.
  • Here L is the latent heat of vapourization
  • We know that water gets converted into steam at 100°C
  • When we heat water to convert it into steam, the water isn't converted into steam just when it reaches 100°C, rather it requires extra heat, only then it is converted into the steam
  • This "extra heat" is calculated by mL, where m is mass and L is latent heat of vapourization.
