Why can the progeny of two individuals not inherit a whole set of genes from both?
The textbook says that this is because the two characteristics would then be linked.
Can someone explain this statement?

If progeny inherits whole set of genes than the no. Of chromosomes will increase than a normal cell should have. This will disturb the genetic stability of the species.
If chromosomes number change than the progeny will not be able to reproduce with the original species an form a new species
