Why can we dust be removed from carpet by shaking it or beating it with a stick

Dust particles were at rest on the carpet. However when you beat the carpet, you are forcing the dust to move along with the carpet. Due to the dust having inertia, it doesn't move, or rather, it resists motion. This is why dust comes out of a carpet when it is beaten with a stick.
