This is because x-axis shows the time and time is independent of anything .....
If the graph is perpendicular to x axis ,it means that time is constant which is not at all possible

Time is indipendant on distance time graph. So time should always lie on x axis. Distance is proportional to time but time isn't proportional to distance.
