Why can we not open or close a door by appyling force at the hinger?

There is no rotational motion

A door opens due to torque applied on it
And Torque is Force×perpendicular distance about which the door is to rotate in order to open.
But at hinge perpendicular distance is zero as a result of which torque is zero .
So the door can't be opened by applying force at the hinge
