Canada has six time zones because Canada is very large and it takes the sun six hours to cross over it. High noon, with the sun directly overhead, occurs on the east coast six hours before high noon on the west coast.

The vast longitudinal extent of Canada which covers upto 90 degrees of longitude is responsible for its 6 different time zones practiced in the same country.  Time zones were invented by a Canadian Sir Stanford Fleming who laid the concept of prime meridian.  Mathematically it covers 1/4 th of earth's longitudinal extent which is 90 degrees.  Similarly it takes 1/4 th of the 24 time zones which is 6 time zones.
